About Us
A Multi-Jurisdictional Investigative Team

SMcRT investigators are assembled from eleven police agencies throughout Summit County and include officers from  Bath, Boston Heights, Fairlawn, Hudson, Norton, Macedonia, Richfield, Summit County Metro Parks, Silver Lake, Stow, Tallmadge and Twinsburg, with more agencies planning on joining in the near future.

SMcRT also works closely with the Summit County Engineer's Office, the Summit County Medical Examiner and municipal and county prosecutor's offices.

The Unit is divided into three response teams that rotate on-call each week. Unit Commanders and Team Leaders are all Level III Crash Reconstructionists who have training in Vehicle Dynamics, Crush Deformation, Low Speed Impact, Commercial Vehicles, Motorcycles, Occupant Kinematics, Lamp and Tire Analysis, Evidence Collection and Court Room Testimony.

The Unit is investigative only and will not initiate any enforcement action. Investigators support and advise the requesting agency as to the causes and factors involved in the crash and may recommend what charges may be appropriate, but the home agency never loses control over a crash in their jurisdiction.

SMcRT investigators can provide an agency with a professional and scientific analysis and reconstruction of a serious crash that will stand up in court. We can advise and help prepare your officers for testimony and cross-examination and arm them with the facts and show them how to properly present them. In some cases, we can even testify in court to support your department.
